Cockroaches

cockroach1

The Australian Cockroach

is a large reddish brown cockroach with a yellow margin around the thorax and yellow edges to front part of fore wings. The antennae are long and the legs are spiky. Cockroaches live in warm, dark, wet places, because they need to be near water. They are often found in sewers and around pipes and drains. Australian Cockroaches crawl through dirty areas and then walk around our homes tracking in lots of bacteria and germs. They can contaminate food by shedding their skins. Their cast off skin and waste byproducts are allergens that can trigger allergic reactions, asthma and other illnesses, especially in children.

cockroach3

The German Cockroach

is pale brown with two longitudinal streaks on the front part of the thorax. Adults have wings but rarely fly. They are mainly nocturnal. The young are similar to adults but wingless and dark brown (almost black), with a single light stripe down the middle of the back. Dense populations can leave an unpleasant smell.

The German Cockroach is an insect pest found in homes, shops, food processing plants and restaurants etc. They prefer warm, humid environments. They shelter in cracks and crevices and avoid light. In buildings, they are found close to food and water in kitchens as well as other food handling areas. They are readily moved to new habitats in food packages and boxes.

cockroach2

The American Cockroach

is reddish brown with a yellowish margin on the body region behind the head. Immature cockroaches are similar to adults but have no wings. They are fast moving insects and scuttle for cover when disturbed. It does not have yellow on the edges of the wing covers like the Australian Cockroach

American cockroaches prefer moist areas, but can live in dry areas with access to water. They enter homes when foraging for food and water. They are often seen in gardens, around garbage, and in sheds or garages.
